Eastern Florida State College Women’s Tennis Team in Fourth Place at National Tournament

Titans advanced to the quarterfinals in eight of the nine events

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — The Eastern Florida State College women’s tennis team finished in fourth place after the round of 16 at the NJCAA Division I National Championship in Tyler, Texas.
The Titans advanced to the quarterfinals in eight of the nine events, one point behind the trio of Cowley College, Hillsborough Community College and Tyler Junior College.
Laura Yans picked up a win on Sunday against Northwest Mississippi’s Macarena Arisio 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. Yans, who is the No. 4 seed at No. 1 singles, will play St. Petersburg College’s Rima Yoshida who won her match 6-1, 6-2 as the No. 5 seed.
The pair met earlier this season with Yans picking up the win in three sets. They will face off again in the quarterfinals Monday at 8 a.m.
Elena Martinez Prado defeated Jones College’s Molly Bennett 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to advance into the quarterfinals. The No. 5 seed Prado will play Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Valeria Callejo who won 7-5, 6-2 in the round of 16. Monday’s quarterfinal match will begin at 8 a.m.
Maria Gento advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Hinds Community College’s Camila Mordiz. Gento, the No. 3 seed, will play No. 6 Paula Oborocea of Seward County CC at 8 a.m. Monday.
Sara Valentina Ladino cruised into the quarterfinals, defeating Hinds Community College’s Tierney Cronin 6-1, 6-0. Ladino, the No. 5 seed, will face No. 4 seed Sylvie Peart of Tyler Junior College at 9:30 a.m. on Monday.
Dasha Moskalenko picks up a win at No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-3 against Iowa Central’s Patricia Sazambile to advance to the quarterfinals. Moskalenko, the No. 4 seed, will play No. 5 Kendra Arostegui of Cowley College at 9:30 a.m. Monday.
Thais Mitlmeier lost in the round of 16 at No. 4 singles, falling 6-4, 6-4 to Jones College’s Theresa Emelio.
The No. 1 doubles team of Gento and Prado teamed up to defeat Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Valeria Callejo and Danique Vermue in a tight three-set match as Gento and Prado won the first set 6-0, then lost the second 6-2 before taking the match 7-6 in the third.
Gento and Prado will face No. 2 seed Amelia Devlin and Candy Wei of Tyler Junior College on Monday afternoon.
The No. 2 doubles team of Mitlmeier and Moskalenko lost the first set 7-6 but rebounded to win the match 6-3, 6-2 and will face No. 3 seed Yui Suzuki and Daniela Vivas Valencia of St. Petersburg College. St. Petersburg College won the matchup during the regular season 8-5. The rematch was in the quarterfinals on Monday.
At No. 3 doubles the duo of Ladino and Yans picked up a straight set win to advance, winning 6-3, 6-4. The sixth seed played No. 3 seed Natalia Garcia Matea and Sylvie Peart of Tyler Junior College who also won in straight sets to advance.
