BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA—Each year, the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall is the centerpiece of the weeklong activities at the Annual Vietnam and All Veterans Reunion at Wickham Park in Melbourne.

My broadcasting partner, Orville Susong, and I selected one name from the wall to honor and remember. We do this to put a face with a name.

With over 58,000 names on the Wall, it is easy to forget that each one of these names has a story. Even after they pass, it can, and does, have a devastating effect on their families and friends.

This year, we randomly selected Robert S. Mummert to honor.

Robert S. Mummert was randomly chosen from over 58,000 names at the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall by the Friday Night Locker Room’s Steve Wilson and Orville Susong. The Wall is displayed at Wickham Park for the 37th Annual Vietnam and All Veterans Reunion.

Robert Sterling Mummert was born on April 14, 1944, in Ohio. He grew up in Rialto, California, and graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1962. He married the love of his life, Wilma Ditchcreek, on August 7, 1965, in San Bernardino, California.

Mummert was drafted into the U.S. Army and began his tour of duty in Vietnam on March 3, 1967. He had the rank of Specialist Fourth Class and was in the 25th Infantry Division, 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry, B Company. Mummert’s specialty was Light Weapons Infantry.

On July 5, 1967, in South Vietnam, Binh Duong province, Mummert’s unit came under anti-tank fire. As a result, he was killed in action. Binh Duong was a key area of conflict, with numerous engagements between U.S., ARVN, and NVA/VC forces.
