Titusville Demonstrates Low Impact Development for Stormwater Management
By Space Coast Daily // May 25, 2025

BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA — In an effort to promote sustainable environmental practices, the City of Titusville has introduced a demonstration site showcasing two innovative Low Impact Development techniques aimed at managing stormwater naturally and effectively.
LID is a set of engineering strategies that manage rainfall runoff by working in harmony with nature. Rather than allowing stormwater to wash over impervious surfaces and carry pollutants into local waterways, these techniques enable rainwater to soak into the ground, be filtered by vegetation, or evaporate in a way that mimics the natural water cycle.
At the demonstration site, two specific LID approaches are highlighted:
● Bioswales: These are landscaped channels designed with soil, plants, and mulch to filter and slow stormwater runoff. They effectively capture and absorb excess nutrients, helping to prevent pollution from reaching nearby rivers and streams.
● Pervious Pavement: This innovative paving solution features a porous surface that allows water to pass through, reducing surface runoff. By enabling rainwater to seep into the underlying ground, it naturally filters pollutants and replenishes groundwater supplies.
Both methods contribute significantly to improved water quality, reduced flooding, and the preservation of aquatic habitats.
