BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – Brevard Public Schools presented the Enlistment Ceremony of the Space Coast, an event dedicated to honoring and celebrating the men and women enlisting in our armed forces this year.

The ceremony, which took place on Thursday, May 15, at Viera High School Stadium, featured an array of dignitaries, including a representative from the Pentagon in Washington, DC.

“The fact that this is the highest number of students who have enlisted in military service ever in the history of Brevard Public Schools, says a lot about these students, says a lot about this county, and says even more about the families and community that raised them,” said Brevard Public School Board member Matt Susin.

“In a time when students are raised with social media, influencers, and video games, these young men and women made the decision to buck that trend and serve our great country.”

This significant event featured a formal program recognizing the commitment and dedication of our future service members.

Community leaders, military officials, family members, and friends were invited to show support for these brave men and women as they embark on their journey to serve our nation.

“The ceremony is a testament to the strong patriotic spirit within our community and an opportunity for all of us to express our gratitude for those who choose to protect our freedoms,” said a Brevard Public Schools spokesperson.

Among the attendees were Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey; Brigadier General John Dreska from the Pentagon; Brevard County Commissioners Thad Altman, Rob Feltner and Katie Delaney; State Representative Monique Miller; State Senator Debbie Mayfield; State Senator Tom Wright; Brevard Public School Board members Matt Susin, Megan Wright, Gene Trent and John Thomas; BPS Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell; and Rob Medina and Keith VanBuren from Congressman Mike Haridopolos’ office.

Col. Christopher Bulson, Deputy Commander at Patrick Space Force Base, administered the oath.

Upon enlisting in the United States Armed Forces, whether a soldier, Marine, sailor, airman, or Coast Guardsman, takes the following oath of enlistment required by federal statute:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

The oath is more than a formality that adds flair to a commissioning or promotion ceremony. It provides the foundation of our military.

“With nearly 1,000 JROTC students from over a dozen school battalions supporting the largest number of their brothers and sisters enlisting in military service ever in Brevard, this will be a night to remember,” said Susin.

“With helicopters performing a flyover, cannons firing, passionate speeches by generals from the Pentagon, Patrick Space Force Base, the 45th Space Wing, senators, representatives, and local leaders, and ending with a firework show, this ceremony will be a symbol in future years that represents the core and character of Brevard County students.”
