The Mind of Ben Lars Schlitz, Analyst Merging Sports, History, and Data

By  //  June 25, 2025

If sports journalism had an MVP, Ben Lars Schlitz might be in the race to be it. Born on October 12, 1971, the German has carved out a distinctive niche, seamlessly mixing sports, historical narratives and sharp data analysis. This Mannheim and Heidelberg graduate is fluent in both German and English, which has helped him reach a global audience fascinated by his insights into crypto, gambling, fintech, and especially the online betting world in the last few years. Today, we dive behind the scenes to discover how Schlitz crafts his unique narratives.

The Roots of His Curiosity, back in Stuttgart

The story of Ben Lars Schlitz begins in Stuttgart, a city famous for precision engineering… So people might think it’s some kind of disappointment that Schlitz ended up a journalist, something he disagrees with. “My hometown’s meticulous approach deeply influenced my analytical methods, I’m quite sure about that”, he pointed out.

He even recalls with a smile how engineered-minded the city was. “Everything seemed like it needed an engineering approach, even sports. The way Mercedes-Benz built cars, that’s how I wanted to build my understanding of football, basketball, and history”, he mentioned.

His academic years at Mannheim were followed by postgraduate studies at Heidelberg, sharpening his analytics prowess. But how exactly did he blend that academic rigor into journalism? “I’ve always loved storytelling”, Schlitz admits. “However, I quickly realized that numbers and history were essential in creating richer, more compelling stories. Sport, to me, is not just what happens during the game, but everything around it”.

Sports Journalism Meets Historical Context

Schlitz’s approach to sports journalism is different from other professional mates. When discussing NBA basketball, for instance, he references historical parallels, statistics, and even economic conditions. It’s not a surprise, then, that Schlitz is adept at naming NBA teams and players, weaving them naturally into our conversation.

“Take a player like LeBron James,” Shlitz says passionately. “When you examine his career, it’s impossible to separate it from socioeconomic impacts in Akron or even Cleveland’s historical sports struggles, as the state has been pretty poor in that regard. Similarly, analyzing Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors isn’t complete without referencing Silicon Valley’s tech culture influencing the team’s innovative playing style, which has dominated the league for more than half a decade.”

His method involves historical context that extends far beyond a few scores or match summaries. Temas like the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics or Chicago Bulls don’t just represent franchises to Schlitz, they are historical entities with socio-cultural identities.

“If you have a look at the Lakers, you quickly realize that their identity isn’t just basketball, it’s showbiz, just like the city they are based on. Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, now Luka Doncic… each player carries the team’s historical glamour in some way. Similarly, the Celtics have always embodied the community spirit that the city is known for, with Bill Russell, Larry Bird, or Jayson Tatum as the leader of the team,” he explains.

The Schlitz method

Asked how he incorporates data into his storytelling, Schlitz reveals his secret sauce: research and narrative intuition. For the German journalist, data without context “is meaningless”. He puts the example of Nikola Jokic: when he dominates for the Denver Nuggets, according to him, the number shows efficiency and versatility, but the story behind his rise is equally fascinating.”

Sports Is Just The Tip of The Iceberg

Though renowned for sports analysis, Schlitz’s journalism style frequently intersects with financial technology, crypto, and online betting.

“Sports betting is an exciting crossover. It’s data-driven, but the emotional component is latent as well. Predicting outcomes involves understanding psychology, historical trends, and statistical probability. When you bet on NBA games, you’re analyzing performance metrics, player health, and even historical team rivalries,” says Schlitz.

During our interview, he goes further in that regard, linking fintech, crypto and sports betting. “When people discuss them, they’re addressing innovation in how transactions happen. Companies using blockchain to secure best or fintech apps streamlining beating processes are fascinating stories themselves.

Journalism as Lifelong Learning

Schlitz’s career exemplifies continuous learning and adaptation to new technologies. That’s why, the major advice he gives in our conversation with him is to blend practical guidance with deep-seated philosophy.

“If you are beginning your career, the most important piece of advice I can give you is to stay curious. Journalism isn’t about knowing everything about every topic; it’s about constantly asking new questions and seeking the answer to them. The questions you ask drive your analysis and writing.”, he assesses.

As our conversation wraps, Schlitz emphasizes, “I’m just fortunate my curiosity leads me to explore so many fascinating areas: sports, history, and data. Every day, I learn something new.” Only the future knows which is the next step for this talented, multidisciplinary journalist.
