BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — Preliminary work that will soon pave the way for the construction and widening of Ellis Road, Brevard County’s and the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization’s No. 1 priority transportation project, is now underway.
The efforts include clearing vegetation, debris, and other materials within the right-of-way along Ellis Road, also known as St. Johns Heritage Parkway, from west of John Rodes Boulevard to west of Wickham Road in Melbourne/West Melbourne.
This project serves as preparation for upcoming utility construction and relocation activities planned for spring 2026.
The $56.6 million Ellis Road widening project has been in development for over two decades. Thanks to sustained regional collaboration, construction is scheduled to begin in late 2026.
Funding for the project includes $10 million from the Florida Department of Transportation, Brevard County Public Works Capital Improvement Project funds, and municipal contributions, as well as $15 million through a state Infrastructure Bank loan, facilitated by FDOT District 5.

Once clearing and grubbing work has been completed, which was originally anticipated by early fall. There will be a nine-month window for utility relocation prior to the commencement of the widening project.
Ellis Road is a vital connection between the Interstate 95 Interchange, economic generators, and the Melbourne Orlando International Airport. It is also an important gateway for the 20,000 employees who work in the surrounding vicinity.
In its current state, this corridor is unable to accommodate travelers and poses safety risks.
