NHTSA – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a public safety reminder highlighting that January is one of the deadliest months of the year for pedestrian fatalities, urging both drivers and pedestrians to take extra precautions on roadways.
According to NHTSA, reduced daylight hours, early sunsets, and challenging visibility conditions during winter months contribute to an increased risk for serious and fatal pedestrian crashes.
Officials emphasized that driver awareness and responsible behavior play a critical role in preventing tragedies during this time of year.
NHTSA advised drivers to remain alert, reduce speeds, and use extra caution in hard to see conditions, particularly during nighttime hours and in areas with pedestrian traffic.
Pedestrians were also encouraged to follow the rules of the road, walk on sidewalks whenever available, and use designated crosswalks to improve visibility and safety.
The agency stressed that pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility, with both drivers and those on foot needing to remain vigilant to reduce the risk of deadly crashes.
NHTSA continues to promote awareness and safe travel practices as part of its ongoing efforts to save lives on the nation’s roads.
