FHP: Two Killed in Fiery Crash on State Road 520 and Kiwanis Island Park Road on Merritt Island

BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA — Two people were killed early Saturday morning when their vehicle burst into flames after crashing into a traffic light pole, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash occurred around 2:34 a.m. near the intersection of State Road 520 and Kiwanis Island Park Road.
Troopers say a 2011 Toyota RAV4 was heading westbound when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The SUV veered off the road and collided with a traffic control light pole.
The impact of the crash caused the vehicle to catch fire, trapping both the driver and a passenger inside.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene but were unable to rescue the occupants. Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
The identities of the victims have not been released, pending notification of next of kin and confirmation by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
FHP is continuing to investigate what led to the crash.
