BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has increased the likelihood that a weather system forming off Florida’s northeast coast could strengthen into a tropical depression or storm later this week.
Tuesday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 pm. Sunny, with a high near 93. Heat index values as high as 109. Light and variable wind becoming east southeast 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon.
Tuesday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 8 pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 78. East southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.
In its Tuesday morning update, the NHC reported that a weak surface trough off the southeastern U.S. is expected to develop into a low-pressure system within the next couple of days. Conditions appear favorable for slow development, with the system potentially becoming a tropical depression as it shifts slowly westward before curving northward later this weekend.
The system now has a 10% chance of forming within the next 48 hours and a 40% chance over the next seven days—up from a 30% chance on Monday.
Brevard County could see increased rainfall due to the stalled front over North Florida, which is expected to drift southward and interact with the forming low-pressure area. The National Weather Service in Melbourne is forecasting up to 2 inches of rain across Central Florida later this week.
Elsewhere in the Atlantic, the NHC continues to monitor a tropical wave that recently moved off the coast of Africa. Though currently disorganized, the system could gradually strengthen with a 50% chance of development into a tropical depression later this week as it travels west-northwest across the Atlantic.
Tropical Storm Dexter, which formed late Sunday, remains far from land and is not expected to pose any threat. Dexter is the fourth named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, following Andrea, Barry, and Chantal.
