Executive Order will also impose sweeping restrictions on mail-in voting

WASHINGTON, DC – President Donald Trump announced that he intends to issue a new executive order mandating voter identification requirements in U.S. elections, while also imposing sweeping restrictions on mail-in voting.
Polling shows that the idea remains highly popular among Americans. A Gallup survey conducted just before the 2024 elections found that 84% of U.S. adults supported requiring voters to present identification at the polls, and 83% favored proof of citizenship for first-time registrants.
Trump shared the announcement on his Truth Social account, declaring that ensuring voter ID is non-negotiable.
“Voter I.D. Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS! I Will Be Doing An Executive Order To That End!!! Also, No Mail-In Voting, Except For Those That Are Very Ill, And The Far Away Military. USE PAPER BALLOTS ONLY!” he wrote.
President Trump has continued to frame election security as a central priority of his administration.
Supporters of voter ID argue that it is a necessary safeguard to prevent fraud and maintain confidence in elections, while opponents contend that such measures could suppress turnout, particularly among minority, elderly, and low-income voters.
President Trump’s proposed restrictions would also sharply curtail the use of mail-in ballots, allowing them only for members of the military serving overseas and voters with severe health conditions.
That would mark a dramatic change from the broader access to mail-in voting adopted in many states during the COVID-19 pandemic and sustained in subsequent election cycles.
If signed, the executive order is likely to face immediate legal challenges, raising the prospect of another showdown over the limits of presidential power and the long-running national debate over how elections should be conducted in the United States.
