DIRECTOR PATEL: Indictment part of an effort to restore public trust in the FBI

Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of making false statements to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding tied to the bureau’s handling of the Trump–Russia investigation.

WASHINGTON, DC — Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of making false statements to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding tied to the bureau’s handling of the Trump–Russia investigation.

The indictment, announced Wednesday, follows a years-long investigation into whether Comey misled lawmakers during his September 2020 testimony about the FBI’s “Crossfire Hurricane” probe.

That inquiry, launched under his leadership in 2016, examined potential ties between Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and Russian operatives.

Attorney General Pam Bondi, in a statement posted on X, said the charges underscore the Justice Department’s commitment to accountability. “No one is above the law,” Bondi wrote.

“Today’s indictment reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people.”

FBI Director Kash Patel echoed that sentiment, calling the indictment part of an effort to restore public trust in the bureau.

“For far too long, corrupt leadership weaponized law enforcement, damaging once proud institutions,” Patel said. “Everyone, especially those in positions of power, will be held to account — no matter their perch.”

The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, just before the five-year statute of limitations expired earlier this week.

“For far too long, corrupt leadership weaponized law enforcement, damaging once proud institutions,” FBI Director Kash Patel said. “Everyone, especially those in positions of power, will be held to account — no matter their perch.”

Comey’s leadership of the FBI came under intense scrutiny in the aftermath of the 2016 election. Special Counsel Robert Mueller was later appointed to continue the Russia investigation, which concluded in 2019 without finding evidence of criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

In 2019, another special counsel, John Durham, was tasked with examining the origins of the FBI’s probe. His final report sharply criticized the bureau, concluding that investigators overlooked warning signs that political actors may have attempted to manipulate law enforcement for partisan purposes.

The indictment against Comey comes as former CIA Director John Brennan also faces a separate criminal inquiry linked to the same period.

Comey, who led the FBI from 2013 until his dismissal by President Trump in 2017, has not yet publicly responded to the charges.
