PREVIEW: High School Teams Across The Space Coast Prepare For Playoff Matchups

The road to a state championship begins Friday night as eight Brevard County programs hit the field for the opening round of the FHSAA high school football playoffs.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The road to a state championship begins Friday night as eight Brevard County programs hit the field for the opening round of the FHSAA high school football playoffs.

With every game kicking off at 7:00 p.m., local teams are preparing for intense matchups both at home and on the road.

In the words of the famous coach Jim Mora, “Playoffs…..?! you kidding me?! I just hope we can win a game.” For nine area high schools in Brevard County, they hope to win more than just a game, but to capture a State Championship.

One of those teams being the three-time defending state champion Cocoa Tigers. This year will be a challenge more so than previous years. Cocoa, a No. 3 seed in their region opens against Newberry at Cocoa tonight. While tonight’s game shouldn’t give Cocoa trouble, the path to the state championship will not run through Cocoa as previous years.

Cocoa could face a potential matchup with the No. 1 Bradford Tornadoes. The Tigers held off the Tornadoes in the Kickoff Classic this year, a game that head coach Ryan Schneider stated could potentially happen when speaking to his team after that August. Fast forward a couple months later and Cocoa could potentially do just that.

Eau Gallie looks to continue its strong season as it hosts Tavares, while Viera aims to advance with home-field advantage against Riverview.

Several Brevard teams face challenging road trips. Rockledge travels to Zephyrhills, Heritage heads south for a tough matchup against national powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas, and Melbourne visits Armwood in what promises to be a physical battle.

Meanwhile, MCC hosts Orlando Christian Prep as they look to keep their postseason hopes alive.
