WATCH: Merritt Island Community Welcomes BCFR’s Newest Engine with Traditional Push-In Ceremony

WATCH: Brevard County Fire Rescue Station 42 held a Push-In ceremony for BCFR’s newest engine. The Friday Night Locker Room’s Steve Wilson had the opportunity to talk with BCFR Fire Chief Patrick Voltaire prior to the ceremony. Minutes later, firefighters and residents cleaned and pushed the newest engine into the bay.
BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – Crews from Brevard County Fire Rescue Station 42, along with command staff, community leaders, and Merritt Island residents, gathered today to celebrate a time-honored fire service tradition: the Push-In ceremony for BCFR’s newest engine.
The event began with a ceremonial wet down and towel dry, symbolizing a fresh start and paying tribute to generations of firefighters who came before.
Following the wash, attendees joined together to manually push the new engine into its bay—a tradition that dates back to the 1800s, when horse-drawn steam engines had to be physically guided back into the firehouse after returning from calls.
Although modern engines run on horsepower rather than horses, the ritual remains a meaningful reminder of the service’s deep history and camaraderie.
The ceremony drew a strong turnout from the community, reflecting the pride and support Merritt Island residents have for their local firefighters.
BCFR expressed gratitude to everyone who attended and helped welcome the new engine into service.
