BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Hi, I’m Chief David Gillespie of the Melbourne Police Department. Welcome to our new home, named in honor of Officer Joseph Pelicano, who was killed in the line of duty on October 17, 1986.
Thank you for joining us. Let’s take a look. This is our community room, and we utilize it for our Police Community Relations Council meetings. We also meet with other homeowner associations, and it’s available for other people to use.
This is where we also do training. This is our squad room; this is where officers report at the beginning of their shift. They go over all pertinent information, and we also use this for training. We also use this for multi-jurisdictional meetings and briefings before and after events.
Our gym is set up so officers can come in and work out. It gives them a private area to stay in shape, and it’s all part of our overall wellness program.
Our mat room provides an opportunity for officers to practice their defensive tactics techniques and to give us additional opportunities to train individually in specific areas of jiu-jitsu or different fighting techniques.
Even in our locker room, we recognize the dedication and sacrifice of Officer Joseph Pelicano. You’ll see here in locker number 174 that we have a plaque for Officer Pelicano, as that was his ID number while serving with the Melbourne Police Department.
Our evidence processing area is where officers submit their evidence for storage.

This is our command center for police operations, and this is where we run operations out of during emergencies or hurricanes.
We also meet here regularly for command-level meetings. Our emergency operations center allows us to run operations for the entire city during emergencies such as a hurricane, and it also provides an opportunity for us to conduct training and hold our bi-weekly crime meetings.
Lastly, this is our communications center, and this is a state-of-the-art environment for our communications officers.
Thank you for joining us on this tour of our new police station. I also want to thank our community for voting in support of the bond referendum in 2018 and for helping us make our dream a reality.
