What Additions Can Help Protect Against the Space Coast’s Weather?
By Space Coast Daily // November 28, 2025

The weather we experience in the Space Coast is some of the best in the world, but that doesn’t mean we’re always lucky. Extreme weather events are becoming increasingly common, and with Florida directly in the path of many hurricanes, we need to be careful.
Being proactive is the best defense to collect and set up all we need for when the next big bad weather event comes around. So, how can we protect ourselves well in advance, to clear ourselves of the worry that might otherwise linger at the back of our minds?
Power is the Key
The first thing that often drops out in weather emergencies is the power. Depending on the weather event, getting this back can take days or even weeks, putting us in a dangerous position. You have two main solutions here: generators or solar. Generators can be the most cost-effective and powerful in the short term, but they’re also reliant on fuel. Solar, while more expensive up front, offers additional advantages over time.
With a solar and battery system, you don’t need to power everything you used to; you just need enough to keep the basics running until the main grid returns. Until then, you still have access to anything with low energy costs, from the necessities to entertainment.
For necessities, you could look at kettles to boil water, hot plates or microwaves to cook, and freezers to store food. While you might not be able to run something more power-hungry like an oven or an air conditioner full-blast, these systems are efficient enough to run on a decent solar and battery backup.
For entertainment, you again might not be able to partake in the most power-hungry uses like using computers or watching TV, but you do have many other options. If you’re a fan of playing games on your mobile, like UK slots, for example, even a modern solar panel will keep you active. Titles like Happy Nets and Big Bass Splash won’t place enormous strain on your system, so you’ll be able to keep playing without issue, as long as cell towers remain active.

Food and Water
Hoarding and rushing for supplies before and during extreme weather events is a tale as old as time. It can also be dangerous to your health and your wallet, placing you in danger of being caught up in the threatening environment. Instead, it’s better to always maintain a ration of stored food and water that you can turn to.
While not especially exciting, food like dried pastas, canned goods, dried beans, and salt can last for years if properly stored. You might want to practice with the ingredients first, but once you build up a base, you can keep this locked up, checking on them only occasionally to ensure they haven’t been compromised.
Water is even more of a concern, with FEMA recommending each household maintain at least one gallon of water per person per day. This is average, however, so warmer environments like the Space Coast might be better suited with a larger water ration. It might also be a good idea to keep a kettle handy, so you can boil water if your stored supply does eventually run out. Remember, food-grade plastic is the best choice for storage for many; otherwise, you risk contamination.

Keeping Protected
Our last piece of advice is to look at what you’ll need to physically protect your home from extreme weather events. This could be in the form of barriers for high winds or ways to lift your belongings in case of flooding. You might also need to protect your property from fire or extreme temperatures in the case of drought. While it might be impossible to cover all bases immediately, you should at least have a plan for all outcomes.
There is no way to guarantee a perfect defense from all extreme weather events, but with the right preparation, you can drastically increase your chances. To protect your home in the Space Coast and give you more time to help the community, take these ideas seriously, and you’ll be in a better place in the years ahead.
