High Wind Warning and Cold Weather Advisory Impact the Space Coast — Damaging Gusts, Travel Trouble and Chilly Conditions Expected
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The National Weather Service in Melbourne, Florida, has issued a High Wind Warning and a Cold Weather Advisory for the Space Coast as strong winds and frigid wind chills move into the region Sunday night.
The warning covers multiple counties across the Atlantic coast and inland, including Coastal Indian River, Coastal Saint Lucie, Inland Indian River, Inland Martin, Inland Northern Brevard, Inland Saint Lucie, Inland Southern Brevard, Mainland Northern Brevard, Mainland Southern Brevard, Northern and Southern Brevard Barrier Islands, and Okeechobee.
Forecasters say northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph will be possible through the afternoon — strong enough to down trees and power lines. Sporadic power outages and difficult travel conditions are likely, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as trucks and buses.
Cold Weather Advisory Tonight Into Monday Morning: In addition, a Cold Weather Advisory is in place from midnight tonight through 9 a.m. Monday for much of those same areas. Very cold wind chill values, potentially as low as the upper 20s, are expected as temperatures drop behind a strong cold front. These conditions can be hazardous for people without adequate shelter or proper clothing.
Meteorologists are urging residents to secure outdoor objects and prepare for a sharp overnight temperature drop. Wind chills near freezing may exacerbate the risk of frostbite for vulnerable individuals and could also harm sensitive vegetation and unprotected plumbing in some inland areas.
Wider Regional Weather Context: The strong winds and plummeting temperatures are part of a broader weather pattern sweeping through Florida and the southeastern United States. Local forecasts have highlighted a strong cold front passing through east central Florida, bringing gusty conditions and a notable drop in temperatures compared with recent days.
Across central Florida, additional Wind and Cold Weather Advisories have also been issued, affecting counties such as Orange, Seminole, and Volusia, as well as inland areas where gusts of up to 45 mph and wind chills in the mid-20s are expected.
Safety and Travel Impacts: Drivers are advised to use caution this afternoon and evening, especially on highways and bridges where crosswinds can create hazardous conditions. Officials warn that unsecured objects such as patio furniture and debris could become airborne, posing additional risks.
Tonight and tomorrow, with temperatures forecast to fall into the 30s and wind chills even lower, residents should plan to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets.
What to Watch For: Today (Sunday): Gusty northwest winds with gusts up to 60 mph through 5 p.m.; Tonight: Temperatures significantly cooler with cold wind chills into Monday morning; and Monday: Gradual warming, but lingering chilly conditions.
