BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA — The Palm Bay Police Department and the community it serves are mourning the loss of Retired K9 Archer, a beloved police dog who passed away peacefully overnight at home with his handler, Corporal Hurtado, by his side.
Archer served the Palm Bay Police Department with distinction from 2015 until his retirement in 2023, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, professionalism, and connection with the public.
Throughout his career, Archer played a critical role in law enforcement operations, assisting with more than 70 arrests and participating in hundreds of deployments that helped keep officers and residents safe.
Beyond his operational success, Archer became a familiar and cherished presence in the community.
Many residents remember him from public demonstrations, outreach events, and frequent appearances on the department’s social media platforms, where his intelligence and personality shone through. Those interactions helped humanize police work and strengthened the bond between the department and the public.

While Archer was a focused and dependable working K9 on duty, those closest to him say his favorite place was alongside Corporal Hurtado and his fellow officers.
Off duty, Archer was known for his friendly and social nature, his love of playing ball, and his enthusiasm for treats. He was not only a valued law enforcement partner but also a loyal companion and a morale booster within the department.
The Palm Bay Police Department expressed gratitude for Archer’s years of faithful service and extended condolences to Corporal Hurtado and all who worked with and loved the retired K9.
