SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA – Super Bowl LX will feature a familiar matchup, even if the faces and storylines look very different. Eleven years after one of the most unforgettable finishes in NFL history, the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks are set to meet again with a Lombardi Trophy on the line.
The franchises last clashed in Super Bowl XLIX, a game that remains etched into league lore. New England’s victory was sealed when Russell Wilson’s late interception at the goal line was picked off by Malcolm Butler, a moment that instantly became one of the most debated coaching decisions in Super Bowl history.
Now, more than a decade later, the two teams meet again in a rematch that bridges eras.
Seattle is back on the Super Bowl stage for the first time since that heartbreaking loss. Under first-year head coach Mike Macdonald, the Seahawks completed a remarkable turnaround, finishing 14-3 in the regular season before knocking off the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams in the NFC playoffs. This time, it’s Sam Darnold leading the Seahawks, guiding Seattle to the Super Bowl in his first season with the franchise. The Seahawks are seeking their second championship, having captured their first with a dominant win over Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII.
New England’s path to Super Bowl LX reflects a franchise reinventing itself. The Patriots look nothing like the Tom Brady–Bill Belichick dynasty that defined the NFL for two decades. Brady is now in the broadcast booth, while rookie quarterback Drake Maye has ushered in a new era under center.
Belichick has moved on to North Carolina, and former Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel has taken over as head coach, restoring a championship mindset after the roster declined in the final years of the dynasty and Jerod Mayo’s lone season at the helm.
The Patriots aggressively rebuilt in the offseason, combining heavy spending in free agency with a strong draft to reshape the roster.
While most of the names have changed, the sight of New England’s uniforms on Super Bowl Sunday remains familiar. This will be the Patriots’ 12th Super Bowl appearance, with six championships already in the trophy case.
The NFL gets a compelling matchup for its championship game in Santa Clara, California — a clash of past and present, legacy and renewal. Matching the drama of their first Super Bowl meeting will be a tall order, but Super Bowl LX offers both teams a chance to add a new chapter to an already unforgettable rivalry.
