BREVARD SHERIFF WAYNE IVEY: Deputies Arrest Driver Who Registered More Than Four Times the Legal Limit

Driver registers staggering 0.347 breath-test results after deputies stop vehicle for erratic driving

Russell Udink, above, registered a 0.343 and a 0.347 on the breathalyzer after a traffic stop by BCSO deputies.  Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said, “Folks, that is over four times the legal limit and far exceeds the ability to operate a motor vehicle and most likely most other tasks as well. Udink, of course, got a free ride in our lodge courtesy shuttle to the hokie pokie, where he sat behind bars, where he belongs, instead of behind the steering wheel of a car, where he could kill himself or someone else.” (BCSO image)

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Well, folks, as you might imagine, this Valentine’s weekend, there was no shortage of guests staying at Ivey’s Iron Bar Lodge, where they no doubt had an opportunity to meet new people, enjoy a less-than-stellar meal together, and maybe, just maybe, find their forever soulmate…no wait, scratch that, I meant cellmate!

Well, anyway, even though it doesn’t matter how many times we say not to, people continue to drink and drive, and some of them, like ole Russell Udink here, are even overachievers.

You see, while en route to a different call, Deputies observed a vehicle that, for once, was actually driving under the speed limit but was having great difficulty maintaining a single lane.

Recognizing there might be a problem, the Deputies flipped on their blue lights, and Udink thankfully decided to pull over.

Once Deputies began talking to him the could see several signs indicating that he was likely intoxicated. You know signs like mumbling, slurred speech, slow movements, and of course the universal answer to have you been drinking tonight…”a couple of drinks!!”

Since our Deputies are well-known for being fair, they gave Udink an opportunity to participate in the Drunk Olympics. He decided not to compete in the physical games but agreed to the breath-test portion of the competition!

Now this is where the “overachiever” part comes into play as he blew the competition out of the water with a 0.343 and a 0.347!  Folks, that is over four times the legal limit and far exceeds the ability to operate a motor vehicle and most likely most other tasks as well.

The decision to put your life at risk, as well as others’, over some alcohol is absolutely ridiculous, and if you can’t make good decisions, then we will make them for you. You may not care about your life or anyone else’s, but we do, and we will do what it takes to keep our community safe.
