BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Now that the Space Coast high school regular hoops season has concluded, for most teams, the off-season is imminent. However, for many teams, there is still hope for a district title and a postseason run, as the journey to Lakeland begins Tuesday for the boys and girls.

When it comes to the gentlemen, there are only a handful of teams that set themselves apart from the rest of the group. Many of the boys’ teams will be in “survive and advance” mode as the district playoffs hold most of their fate.

Palm Bay, Satellite, Melbourne, Holy Trinity, and Viera all sit in a relatively comfortable spot as the FHSAA State tournament looms in the coming weeks.

Matchups to start round one of district play:

Tuesday, February 3

■ Eau Gallie (12-11) vs. Rockledge (12-13) 6 p.m.

■ Bayside (5-18) vs. Heritage (8-17) 6 p.m.

■ Palm Bay (20-5) vs. Merritt Island (10-10) 6 p.m.

■ Titusville (7-13) vs. Satellite (16-9) 6 p.m.

Palm Bay has had a phenomenal year at 20-5, despite injuries, and has competed with everyone.

About the Matchups:

■ Eau Gallie and Rockledge have not faced each other this season despite having faced many of the same opponents and even playing in the same Rockledge Christmas Shootout. Both teams have 12 wins this season and need a momentum boost, with one team hoping for a district title and a chance at the postseason.

■ Both Heritage and Bayside fell short of Palm Bay High for “best team in Palm Bay,” however, they will face off for the third time in the past three weeks. While the Heritage Panthers boast the better overall record, the Bayside Bears defeated the Panthers in the first two matchups (43-33, 48-40). Will the third time be the charm for Heritage?

■ Palm Bay has had a phenomenal year at 20-5, even while battling injuries; they have competed with everyone. They will be trying to repeat the 30-point victory they had over Merritt Island earlier in January. On the other side, the Mustangs do not want their season to end yet and will be trying to pull off a major upset in district tourney play.

■ Satellite and Titusville have met twice in the past two and a half weeks, and the Scorpions have crushed the Terriers both times. Winning by 20 and 21 in those two matchups, this 16-9 Satellite squad has to be feeling confident going into the district tournament. Titusville has given some teams a run for their money this season. Can they do it on Tuesday night?

Bayside has looked unstoppable this season, at 17-8, they are on a six-game win streak and finished the regular season undefeated against Brevard County teams.

The ladies begin Monday, February 2, as Bayside, Viera, and Heritage await the matchups.

■ Bayside has looked unstoppable this season, at 17-8, they are on a six-game win streak and finished the regular season undefeated against Brevard County teams.

■ Viera put together a really solid 16-6 season, just coming up short against Bayside on several occasions.

Coming off a Final Four appearance last season, Holy Trinity put together a schedule of nationally ranked teams to prepare for another run at the Final Four. While their 14-12 record is not appealing, it does not reflect the caliber of teams the Tigers have faced this season.

■ TitusvilleWest Shore, and Satellite have all put together double-digit-win seasons and are looking at a district title or a runner-up finish for a position in the state tournament that begins next week.

There are plenty of opportunities for boys and girls to have teams make a run in the playoffs. The Palm Bay Pirate boys are trying to accomplish what the girls did last year and win a state championship. While the Lady Bayside Bears and Holy Trinity Tigers are destined to reach the final four.
