Familiar Brevard Foes to Meet in the First Round of the FHSAA Girls Basketball Playoffs

Brevard County will be well represented on both the boys' and girls' sides

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — The road to Lakeland began this week as the Florida High School Athletic Association state basketball playoffs tip off, and Brevard County will be well represented on both the boys’ and girls’ sides.

From the opening round through the state championship, the mission is simple: survive and advance.

For some local programs, however, the draw guarantees heartbreak. In first-round matchups, county rivals Bayside and Heritage on the boys side, and Holy Trinity and Melbourne Central Catholic on the girls side, will face off—ensuring that two Brevard County teams will see their seasons end immediately.

Bayside vs. Heritage Headlines a Loaded Class 6A Bracket

Bayside enters the postseason with momentum after putting together a strong 19–8 campaign.

The Bears earned the No. 2 seed in the Class 6A Region 2 bracket and are eager to validate that placement with a deep playoff run. Standing in their way is a familiar foe in Heritage, a Panthers squad hungry to play spoiler.

The matchup is a rematch of a Cape Coast Conference tournament thriller earlier this season, when Bayside edged Heritage 54–49 in a game that went down to the final moments.

With everything on the line on Friday, February 13, the question looms large: will history repeat itself, or can Heritage deliver payback when it matters most?

Adding to the intrigue in Class 6A Region 2, Viera also remains firmly in the championship conversation, giving Brevard County three legitimate contenders with eyes on a state title.

Holy Trinity and MCC Renew Rivalry on Both Courts

Rivalry week takes on even greater significance as Holy Trinity and Melbourne Central Catholic collide in both the boys and girls brackets.

On the boys’ side, the Tigers and Hustlers know each other well. The teams have already met three times this season—Holy Trinity won the first two, but MCC claimed the most important one, knocking off the Tigers in the district championship game.

Their February 14 playoff meeting adds yet another chapter to a season-long chess match.

The girls’ matchup brings a different storyline. Despite the rivalry, Holy Trinity and MCC have not met this season. Holy Trinity, coming off a Final Four appearance a year ago, enters the postseason confident and poised for another run toward Lakeland.

History Adds Extra Motivation

While the girls’ field is deep with Brevard County contenders, the boys’ side is more selective—but no less dangerous. Programs like Viera, Holy Trinity, and Palm Bay all believe they have what it takes to string together wins and make a serious postseason push.

History looms large as well. The last boys’ basketball state championship in Brevard County came in 2007, when Florida Prep—then known as Florida Air Academy—claimed the title.

The most recent appearance in a boys state championship game followed in 2016, when Holy Trinity reached the final but fell to Bolles, 46–39.

As the opening rounds tip off, one thing is certain: Brevard County basketball will once again be at the center of the state playoff spotlight, with rivalries renewed, legacies on the line, and championship dreams hanging in the balance.
