BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – On Saturday, February 21, approximately 70 dedicated volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help protect and preserve Brevard County’s natural beauty during the annual Battle of the Causeways, hosted by Keep Brevard Beautiful and sponsored by Port Canaveral.
The group focused their cleanup efforts at Kelly Park in Merritt Island and along State Road 528, collecting more than 2,400 pounds of litter and debris from the area.

Volunteers gathered dozens of bags of trash, helping restore the causeways and surrounding environment to a cleaner, safer condition for residents and visitors alike.

The annual event brings together community members, local businesses, and environmental advocates in a friendly competition aimed at improving Brevard’s waterways and roadways. From plastics and discarded packaging to larger debris, the cleanup made a visible impact along one of the county’s busiest corridors.
After a hard morning’s work, volunteers were treated to a well-earned lunch at Gator’s Portside, generously sponsored by Florida Power & Light.

Organizers extended a heartfelt thank-you to everyone who participated, calling the volunteers the true “MVPs of the Causeways” for their commitment to keeping Brevard clean and beautiful.
