Smoother Roads, Safer Crossings Coming to Malabar Road in Palm Bay

Drivers in Palm Bay can expect smoother pavement and improved pedestrian access as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) begins resurfacing a section of Malabar Road from west of Interstate 95 to east of Babcock Street.

BREVARD COUNTY – PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Drivers in Palm Bay can expect smoother pavement and improved pedestrian access as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) begins resurfacing a section of Malabar Road from west of Interstate 95 to east of Babcock Street.

The roadway improvement project is designed to extend pavement life, improve driving conditions, and bring key pedestrian features into compliance with current safety and accessibility standards.

In addition to milling and resurfacing the roadway, FDOT crews will reconstruct multiple pedestrian curb ramps along the corridor so they comply with the latest Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.

FDOT officials say the work will improve mobility for both motorists and pedestrians along one of Palm Bay’s busiest east-west corridors.

“Resurfacing projects like this help preserve our infrastructure and improve safety for everyone who uses the roadway,” an FDOT spokesperson said. “Upgrading curb ramps ensures people of all abilities can safely and comfortably navigate intersections.”

During construction, motorists should anticipate:

■ Temporary lane closures and shifting traffic patterns

■ Reduced speeds through work zones

■ Occasional nighttime or off-peak work to minimize congestion

■ FDOT is encouraging drivers to allow extra travel time, remain alert for workers and equipment, and follow posted signage and flagging operations.

Local businesses and neighborhoods along Malabar Road will remain accessible throughout construction, though short-term driveway or intersection impacts may occur as crews work in specific areas.

Pedestrian Safety Upgrades

The reconstructed curb ramps will feature detectable warning surfaces and improved slopes to meet ADA standards, helping residents with mobility challenges, strollers, and wheelchairs safely cross intersections.

City officials have welcomed the improvements, noting that Malabar Road is a major connector between residential areas, shopping centers, medical facilities, and Interstate 95.

“This corridor is critical for daily travel in Palm Bay,” a city representative said. “These upgrades will make a noticeable difference in both ride quality and pedestrian accessibility.”

FDOT has not released an exact completion date, but officials indicate the project will be completed in phases and is expected to wrap up later this year, weather permitting.
