BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – The Cocoa Police Department, in partnership with The Real Church and the Rockledge Police Department, successfully collected 47 firearms during Friday’s Gun Buyback event held at Save A Lot Plaza in Cocoa.

The event provided community members with a safe, anonymous way to surrender unwanted or unused firearms while helping reduce the potential for guns to fall into the wrong hands through theft, burglary, accidental access, or other criminal activity.

Among the firearms collected was one weapon that had been reported stolen from the City of Rockledge.

The firearm was recovered and will be returned through the appropriate investigative process.

“This event is about more than collecting firearms,” said Cocoa Police Chief Evander Collier. “It’s about creating opportunities to prevent future tragedies, improving public safety, and giving residents a safe option for disposing of firearms they no longer want or need.”

Participants remained in their vehicles while officers safely removed and secured firearms. Gift cards were provided in exchange for eligible firearms, with no questions asked.

The Gun Buyback was part of a broader community violence prevention effort that included the “Beyond the Bullet: Voices Left Behind” community discussion earlier in the week.

The event featured families impacted by gun violence, faith leaders, and law enforcement representatives discussing the lasting effects of violence on individuals, families, and communities.

The Cocoa Police Department thanks The Real Church, Rockledge Police Department, volunteers, and community members who participated in making the event a success.
