BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — Aviation enthusiasts lined up along the fence line and gathered at viewing areas around Melbourne Orlando International Airport on Sunday to catch a glimpse of one of the world’s largest cargo aircraft as an Antonov AN-124 made a rare appearance on Florida’s Space Coast.
The Ukrainian-built AN-124 Ruslan, operated by Antonov Airlines, is among the largest cargo aircraft still in service and is designed to transport oversized and heavy cargo worldwide.
The aircraft’s distinctive high-wing design, enormous fuselage, and 240-foot wingspan make it an unmistakable sight in the skies.
The Antonov’s arrival quickly drew attention from local plane spotters and residents, as visits by the massive cargo jet to Melbourne are relatively uncommon.
The aircraft’s size and unique appearance have made previous Antonov stops at Melbourne Orlando International Airport popular events for aviation fans.
Melbourne Orlando International Airport’s primary runway stretches more than 10,000 feet, providing the infrastructure needed to accommodate large aircraft like the AN-124.
