Ian Strengthens to Category 3 Hurricane, Central Florida Braces For Impact

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Hurricane Ian has strengthened to a level Category 3 during the overnight hours on Tuesday.

The National Hurricane Center says the system is carrying 125 mph max sustained winds and moving north 12 mph.

Ian is moving toward the north near 11 mph.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Brevard County.

A turn toward the north with a slightly slower forward speed is expected today. A turn toward the north-northeast with a further reduction in forward speed is forecast on Wednesday.

On the forecast track, the center of Ian is expected to move near or over western Cuba early this morning.

Ian will then emerge over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico today, pass west of the Florida Keys later today, and approach the west coast of Florida on Wednesday into Thursday.
