WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a heightened terrorism advisory Sunday, warning that recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities have significantly raised the threat of retaliatory attacks on American soil, including cyber intrusions and extremist violence.

According to the advisory, pro-Iranian “hacktivists” and state-linked cyber operatives may view the current climate as a prime opportunity to launch disruptive operations against U.S. infrastructure. The warning also noted concern over the potential for Iran’s religious leadership to issue a fatwa — a religious decree — calling for violent retaliation, which could further inflame extremist elements.

“The likelihood of violent extremists in the homeland independently mobilizing to violence in response to the conflict would likely increase if Iranian leadership issued a religious ruling calling for retaliatory violence,” the alert stated.

The threat level follows a major military escalation in the Middle East. In the wake of an initial Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, President Donald Trump authorized targeted U.S. airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear production sites. That decision has drawn sharp condemnation from Tehran and triggered renewed calls for violence from Iranian-backed militant groups, several of which are already designated as terrorist organizations by the U.S. government.

DHS also expressed concern that the ongoing conflict and U.S. involvement could lead to a surge in antisemitic incidents. The department noted that antisemitic threats and attacks have remained elevated since Hamas’s October 2023 assault on Israel and the subsequent Israeli military operations in Gaza.

Federal agencies are reportedly coordinating with state and local partners to enhance security measures and monitor potential threats across multiple domains, including digital networks and public gathering places.

Officials urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
