BREVARD COUNTY • WEST MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — A quiet West Melbourne neighborhood was left stunned Wednesday night after a double homicide unfolded, leaving an elderly couple dead and their neighbor injured.
Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said the suspected shooter — believed to be a relative of the victims — was apprehended hours after the incident, which took place in the 2500 block of Washington Street.
Sheriff Ivey described the tragedy as an “isolated, domestic homicide.”
Sheriff Ivey said Deputies and officers from both the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and the West Melbourne Police Department responded to the scene around 8:50 p.m. after multiple reports of gunfire.
The neighborhood, located just south of U.S. 192, was quickly locked down as investigators searched for the shooter.
According to Sheriff Ivey, the male victim had approached a neighbor to report that something had happened to his wife inside their home. At that moment, the gunman opened fire, striking the man in the chest and injuring the neighbor in the leg.
The man was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His wife was found deceased inside their home shortly afterward.
The wounded neighbor, who survived a gunshot wound to the leg, is expected to recover.
Law enforcement officials launched a wide-scale search across the surrounding wooded areas and canal-lined roads. Deputies used K-9 units to track the suspect, who was eventually located and taken into custody.
Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s name or a possible motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
