WASHINGTON, D.C. – Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth went head-to-head this week in a spirited pushup and pullup competition at the Department of Defense, underscoring the Trump administration’s renewed emphasis on fitness and healthy living.

Dubbed the “Pete and Bobby Challenge,” the showdown required participants to complete 50 pullups and 100 pushups in under five minutes.

Surrounded by members of the Navy and Marines, the two Cabinet secretaries battled through the workout, with Hegseth narrowly edging out Kennedy, who at 71 years old kept close pace.

“We had our big Pete and Bobby challenge today – 50 pullups, 100 pushups, trying to get it done in under five minutes,” Kennedy said afterward, dressed in his usual workout attire of jeans and a T-shirt.

Hegseth finished just over the five-minute mark, while Kennedy came in seconds behind. Several Marines in attendance completed the challenge well under the time limit, with one managing the feat in less than three minutes.

The event is part of Kennedy’s “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) campaign, which urges Americans to swap processed foods for whole, nutrient-rich meals and make daily exercise a priority. For Hegseth, the competition tied directly to his mission of ensuring that U.S. service members meet strict fitness standards.

“Two-thirds of our military being overweight is unacceptable,” Hegseth wrote on X. “This is what happens when standards are ignored. We’re bringing back real fitness. We will be fit, not fat.”

Both men credited President Donald Trump with inspiring the effort. Earlier this summer, Trump signed an executive order reinstating the Presidential Fitness Test and reestablishing the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, aiming to foster healthier habits in schools nationwide.

“It was President Trump who inspired us to do this,” Kennedy said in a video released after the challenge. “This is the beginning of our tour, encouraging Americans to eat better and get active.”

The two secretaries even issued an invitation to another Cabinet member, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, daring him to attempt the workout under the same five-minute goal.

“Secretary Duffy, you’re next,” Hegseth quipped. “Fifty pullups, 100 pushups—let’s see if you can make the cut.”

The high-energy competition marks the latest push in the administration’s broader fitness initiative, which has become a centerpiece of both Trump’s youth programs and Kennedy’s national health campaign.

“Thank you, President Trump, for setting the example,” Hegseth added. “We’re building a fighting force that is strong, prepared, and healthy. This is about teamwork—and we want all Americans to join us.”
