BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The National Hurricane Center (NHC) continues to monitor multiple systems across the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico, including Hurricane Gabrielle and two tropical disturbances with potential for development this week.

Advisories remain in effect for Hurricane Gabrielle, which is currently located over the central subtropical Atlantic. Gabrielle is not an immediate threat to land, but forecasters are closely monitoring its path and intensity.

A tropical wave located about midway between the Lesser Antilles and the Cabo Verde Islands has seen an increase in showers and thunderstorms.

The NHC reports that environmental conditions are expected to become more favorable beginning Tuesday, and a tropical depression is likely to form by Wednesday or Thursday as the system moves west-northwestward to northwestward across the central Atlantic.

Forecasters currently give the disturbance a 30-percent chance of formation within 48 hours and an 80-percent chance over the next seven days.

Another tropical wave is situated about 300 miles east of the Leeward Islands and is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms.

Although environmental conditions are only marginally conducive for development in the near term, gradual improvement could allow the wave to strengthen later in the week as it slows down and turns more northwestward near the Bahamas.

A tropical depression could form late this week if conditions remain favorable. At present, the NHC estimates the system has a 10 percent chance of formation within 48 hours and a 50-percent chance over the next seven days.

Regardless of development, gusty winds and heavy rainfall are expected to affect portions of the Leeward Islands late Monday night into Tuesday, with impacts spreading to Puerto Rico by late Tuesday and Wednesday.

With Hurricane Gabrielle and these two disturbances active, the Atlantic hurricane season remains busy.

Residents across the Caribbean and southeastern United States are encouraged to remain alert and follow updates from the National Hurricane Center as conditions evolve through the week.
