BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Melbourne police officers arrested D’Nard Deondre Caldwell, 21, Sunday afternoon at the Grant Street Community Center for allegedly threatening a citizen with an AR-15 style rifle.

According to the Sgt. Brian Hart of the Melbourne police, the incident began around 12:33 p.m. when the victim, Ricardo Washington, was walking in the area of Grant Street Community Center when he was approached by Caldwell.

“During the verbal argument, Caldwell pulled an AR-15 rifle that was concealed in his pants,” said Sgt. Hart in a release.

“Caldwell pointed the rifle at the victim while making threatening statements. The victim fearing for his life, fled from the scene and contacted the Melbourne Police Department.

During the course of the investigation, officers received information that Caldwell may have been in the area of the Shull Manor Apartments.

Multiple officers responded to the area in attempts to locate Caldwell. Upon arrival, officers observed numerous families and children in the area, so officers conducted a foot patrol of the area in attempts to locate Caldwell and to ensure the safety of the residents.

During the foot patrol of the apartments, further information was received that Caldwell may be traveling in the area in a red Toyota. Based on current and previous intelligence, officers were able to identify the vehicle Caldwell may be traveling in.

“While conducting an area search for Caldwell, Sgt. Hopping observed the vehicle near the intersection of University Boulevard and Colbert,” said Sgt. Hart.

“A high-risk stop was conducted on the vehicle with the assistance of additional Melbourne police officers and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit (STAR). Caldwell was in the rear seat of the vehicle and taken into custody without incident.”

Caldwell was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Firearm.
