BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE BEACH, FLORIDA – Brevard County Fire Rescue crews were dispatched at 4:08 pm this afternoon for a reported structure fire at 338 Norwich Lane in Melbourne Beach.

The home is located inside the Village of Ponce De Leon Retirement Community.

Firefighters arrived to find a single-wide mobile home with 30 percent fire involvement to the rear of the home and moderate smoke conditions.

There was one female resident at the home when the fire began, but she was able to safely exit the structure and was not injured.  It took firefighters about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire and begin mop up and salvage operations, according to Brevard County Fire Rescue Lt. Jeffrey Taylor.

Officials say that lightning was present in the area when the fire began and a strike may have caused the blaze.  A fire investigator was called to the scene.

Residents of the home will be displaced, but it has not been determined whether they will require assistance from the Red Cross.

No injuries were reported and firefighters were able to prevent flames from extending to surrounding homes.
