BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA –  The Melbourne Police SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiation Unit was on scene at 3444 Sandpiper Court in Melbourne after MPD received a 911 call at 3:25 p.m. today from a woman who was being held against her will.

MPD officers arrived at the scene first and met with the woman who was able to escape from her captor.

During MPD’s investigation, the woman told the cops she was the victim of a sexual battery committed by Xerxes L. Havis, 40, of Melbourne, and that Havis was still inside the home.

MPD officers attempted to make contact with Havis, but he refused to come out of the residence, or speak with the officers.  At that time, the Melbourne Police SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiation Unit were called to the scene, as well as assistance from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team.

After several attempts to contact Havis, he finally spoke with the officers at 7:48 p.m. and gave up. He was taken into custody without incident a few minutes later.

Havis was transported to the Brevard County Jail on a charge of sexual battery.
