BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA A pedestrian laying in the road was struck and killed early Saturday morning on State Road 528 in Cape Canaveral.

State Highway Patrol Troopers Wanda Diaz said that Derek Ryan Riesgraf of Cocoa, 21, was hit as he lay in the roadway about 4:10 a.m. near eastbound Mile Marker 53 of State Road 528.

Diaz said by Dorsten Hills of Merritt Island, 35, was traveling east in the outside lane in a 1998 Saturn when he suddenly saw Riesgraf in front of his car.

He attempted to take evasive action by turning to the left to avoid striking Riesgraf, but was unable to avoid hitting him, Diaz said.

The Saturn’s right tires and undercarriage ran over Riesgraf and he died in the collision.

Hills did not sustain injuries in the crash.

Eerily, Mile Marker 53 was the site of another fatal accident in October 2010.

In that accident a 39-year-old North Carolina woman trying to summon help for her ill husband was struck by two vehicles at the same location.

Tammy Chester of Maiden, N.C., had been a passenger in a 1993 Toyota traveling eastbound on State Road 528 near Mile Marker 53 when her husband suffered a seizure.

She got out of her car and was screaming for help when she was struck and killed by two cars headed east on the busy roadway.
