Junior League of Central & North Brevard Event

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA VILLAGE, FLORIDA – It’s that time of year again. On Friday, the Junior League of Central & North Brevard will conduct the 13th annual Pumpkins in the Park 5K Run/Fitness Walk.

The USATF-certified race site will be run from Cocoa’s Taylor Park in Cocoa Village.

Event activities include the 5K main attraction, which begins at 6:30 p.m., a free Lil’ Pumpkins Race for children starting at 7:45 p.m., a Halloween costume contest, prizes, giveaways and more.

New this year at the race will be The Great American Bake Sale to help end childhood hunger.

According to the 2011 Hunger Summit held in Brevard, more than 51,000 people were fed by local food banks in Brevard County in 2006. By 2010, that number jumped to 125,000. In addition, 26 percent of children in Brevard are hungry and one in four children suffer from food insecurity or hunger.

The Junior League of Central & North Brevard, in partnership with Share Our Strength is hosting the bake sale to help reduce the number of hungry children in our community.

All money raised from the bake sale will help feed hungry kids with after school meal and snack programs; teach low-income families how to cook healthy affordable meals; develop nutrition education programs and help raise awareness of the problem.

Proceeds from the Pumpkins in the Park 5k, will help the Junior League continue to reach out to children and youth with Kids in the Kitchen, an Association of Junior Leagues International endeavor to combat childhood obesity as well as our Done In A Day volunteer program, and also provide annual scholarships to local high school seniors that demonstrate a commitment to voluntarism.

The Junior League of Central & North Brevard has been serving Brevard County since 1967 and are members of the Association of Junior Leagues International.

It is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
