This prestigious award recognizes Corporal Ris as the “Top” Correctional Officer in the state.

Corporal Ris is being honored for his extraordinary work for the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office on and off duty.

The award was presented last night at the Florida Sheriff’s Association Conference with all of Florida’s sheriffs in attendance.

He  was recognized for an incident that occurred on May 14, 2012, where he and his bloodhound partners Buck and Gordito assisted in the search for a missing juvenile.  The juvenile suffered from a medical condition and threatened to take her own life prior to her disappearance.

At one point it appeared the lengthy search for the child was yielding no results, but Corporal Ris refused to stop his search. Other bloodhound K-9 handlers later arrived on scene and assisted in the search for the missing child.

Corporal Ris’ persistence resulted in the safe recovery of the child and brought a peaceful end to a very stressful situation.

In the month of June 2012, he received the Sheriff’s Office Corrections Deputy of the Month Award for another life-saving effort, relating to an incident that occurred on May 21, 2012.

During this incident Corporal Ris was responsible, along with three other Good Samaritans, in saving the life of a 3-year-old child who had nearly drowned. On Sept. 4, 2012, Corporal Ris was presented with a Life Saving Award by Mayor Hal Rose of West Melbourne.

Her also was recognized for his thoroughness inside the Jail Complex, which has resulted in several discoveries of contraband.

The most recent recovery, which occurred on Sept. 25, 2012, resulted in the recovery of “buck” or inmate created alcoholic beverage.

“I could not be more proud of Jim and his outstanding accomplishments that demonstrate his commitment to the protection of the citizens of Brevard County and to his amazing family,” Brevard County Sheirff Wayne Ivey said. “Jim’s actions serve as a constant reminder of the incredible dedication and service the men and women of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office provide to our citizens each and every day.”
