Veterans Assistance Still Available On Merritt Island

BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – The Veterans Service Office at the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center on Merritt Island continues to provides free services to veterans and their dependents or survivors.

The office offers assistance in filing Department of Veterans Affairs claims concerning veterans benefits, Dependence Indemnity Compensation, burial allowances, educational opportunities and health care.

The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to noon six days a week and sometimes later if necessary.

The Chapter Service Officer’s in the office are trained, certified and kept current regarding the latest DVA authorizations and regulations.

In 2012, more than 2,293 personal applications for veterans or their dependents and more than 2,731 hours of service were provided at no cost to recipients.

Chapter Service Officers manning the center are volunteers from Disabled American Veterans Chapter 123 and are formally trained.

The office also provides special services called “The Survivor Benefit Program.”

This offers planning advice for veterans and their spouses in the event of death.

The briefing gives assistance with wills, trusts, power of attorney and documentation required by the DVA for spousal death and burial benefits.

Representatives of the office are available to travel to nursing homes, hospitals and private residences in the event a veteran is not available to come to the office.
