Phelps Selected SSC Men’s Swimmer of the Week

Award follows a 2-0 week for Florida Tech men

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Florida Tech freshman Tyler Phelps was named Sunshine State Conference Men’s Swimmer of the Week, presented by VALIC on Monday. The honor is his first of his Panther career.

Phelps, a native of Loxley, Ala., guided the Panthers to two wins last week, including a 112-93 triumph over 22nd-ranked Lewis. The victory was FIT’s first over a ranked opponent in its three-year history.

Against the nationally ranked Flyers, he won the 100-yard backstroke at 54.37. He also helped his 400-yard medley relay team finish second at 3:38.18.

Four days later, the FIT men won all 11 of their races against Mount Union in a 106-88 victory. Phelps swam the 200-yard backstroke to a first-place finish time of 1:56.95. He and three of his teammates also claimed second place in the 200-yard medley relay at 1:40.50.

Phelps and the Panthers will close out a three-meet home stretch on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Savannah College of Art and Design at the Panther Aquatic Center. Admission is free. Live results will be available through the “Meet Mobile” application on select cell phones and tablets.
