BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame Committee gathered in an all-day meeting today to discuss, debate and vote on the final selections for the inductees into the 2014 class.

Nominations closed yesterday afternoon, and in a statement issued by the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame Committee, the process will be completed over the weekend, and the Class of 2014 will be released on Monday.

Seating for the 2014 Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and Sports Awards, which will be held at the Cocoa Beach County Club on May 9 will be limited to just 400, so don’t delay in making your reservations.

The festivities include a meet and greet with the area’s sports royalty, dinner and the induction proceeding which includes compelling video tributes of each of the inductees.

Sports Hall of Fame Nomination Deadline Extended

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Due to high interest, and a need for additional time for committee members to consider the more than 120 nominations thus far, the deadline for nominations for the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2014 has been extended to Jan. 16.

SCSHOF-COVER-400)For more than a century, athletes from Brevard County have been considered among the finest in America and their accomplishments are honored and immortalized by the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame.

Maverick Multimedia, the parent company of Space Coast Medicine & Healthy Living magazine and SpaceCoastDaily.com created the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame in 2012, and has so far inducted 60 of Brevard’s most outstanding athletes, coaches and sports personalities.

SELECTED IN FOUR CATEGORIES

Nominees are chosen in four categories including professional sports, college sports, high school sports and amateur sports. Special honorary recognition is also be bestowed upon individuals and groups that have made significant contributions to sports on the Space Coast.

A special committee will select the Class of 2014, and the inductees will be enshrined in the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame on May 9, 2014.

Nominees are chosen in four categories including professional sports, college sports, high school sports and amateur sports.

Serving on the committee are Maverick Multimedia President & CEO Tom Palermo, Vice President Giles Malone, Editor-in-Chief Dr. Jim Palermo, Digital Editor Matt O’Hern, local youth sports advocate and promoter Mike Cadore, former Health First COO Larry Garrison and Space Coast Sports Promotions President Rusty Buchanan.

“The list of potential and deserving candidates for 2014 induction include athletes and coaches everybody knows – and some that may have been forgotten with the passing of time,” said Tom Palermo.

VENUE TO PAY TRIBUTE

O’Hern, a life-long Brevardian, has been watching and covering sports on the Space Coast for more than 20 years and has interviewed many of the area’s outstanding athletes for local publications.

2013-SCSHOF-400“It’s amazing how many outstanding athletes have come from Brevard County,” said O’Hern. “We receive nominations for athletes that competed 30, 40, or even 50 years ago – it’s satisfying to be able to recognize these individuals who have been forgotten but made an indelible mark on sports on the Space Coast.”

Avid sports fan, Dr. Jim Palermo, said, “I consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to live and work in Brevard County for 29 years, during which time I’ve had the pleasure of watching and following so many superlative athletes ascend through local junior and school sports programs to the college level, and some into the pros.”

Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame.Malone said he’s often wondered why, with so many outstanding athletes calling Brevard County home, that there previously has not been a way to highlight their skills and record-breaking performances in so many different sports.

“If you think about it, athletes from the Space Coast are woven into the fabric of our lives,” said Malone.

“We have grown up with them. We’ve gone to school with them and watched them stand out in sports arenas and stadiums throughout the world. It makes sense that finally there will be a place to acknowledge what they have done and how proud we are of them.”
