Eastern Florida Baseball Fares Well In Season Statistics

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Eastern Florida State College Titans baseball players earned rankings in nine offensive and six pitching categories in the 2014 NJCAA Region 8/Florida College System Activities Association Baseball Review.

Leftfielder Christian Diaz led Eastern Florida hitters with rankings in eight offensive categories.

He was 24th statewide and tops among the Titans in batting average at .354; was 28th statewide and third among Titans in on-base percentage at .434

He was sixth statewide and tops for EFSC in slugging percentage at .624; was tied for eighth statewide and first among Titans in home runs with eight; was tied for fifth statewide and first among Titans in runs batted in with 53;was tied for ninth statewide and first for EFSC in doubles with 15; was tied for sixth statewide and second for EFSC in triples with five; and was 19th statewide and first among Titans in runs scored with 43.

Diaz, a rising sophomore, capped the season with selection as the FCSAA Southern Conference Player of the Year, FCSAA All-State first-team and NJCAA All-Gulf District Team.

Also earning rankings for EFSC were: Designated hitter Alessandro Lima, 26th statewide in batting average at .351; catcher Austin Leeney 31st at .349 and first baseman Jack Machonis 34th at .344.

Shortstop J.J. Gould, the Southern Conference and FCSAA Defensive Player of the Year, was 18th statewide in on-base percentage at .445; Lima 27th at .435; and Leeney 32nd at .427.

Rightfielder Francisco Cruz was 19th statewide in slugging percentage at .548; Gould was 32nd at .506.

Cruz tied for 13th statewide in home runs at six. Cruz also was 35th statewide in runs batted in at 33 and tied for 12th statewide in doubles at 14. Lima and centerfielder Austin Pereira were 34th in doubles at 11.

Gould was third statewide in triples with six; second baseman Nick Capra tied for 12th with four and Cruz tied for 39th with two.

Gould was 21st in runs scored with 42; Machonis tied for 24th with 40; Lima tied for 33rd with 37 and Cruz tied for 38th with 36.

Machonis tied for sixth statewide in stolen bases with 20 and Pereira tied for 24th with 14.

Pitching wise right hander Jesse Schullstrom was 46th statewide in earned run average at 3.52. Right hander Dulvis Borjas was tied for 33rd statewide in strikeouts with 50 or 6.28 per game along with closer and right hander Chayce Hubbard who had 50 or 10.16 per game. Right hander John Piriz was 45th with 45 or 5.81 per game.

Borjas was tied for eighth statewide in wins with a 7-4 record. Piriz was tied for 22nd statewide in complete games with one. Borjas was 22nd stastewide in innings pitched at 71.2. Piriz tied for 26th at 69.2.

Hubbard, the Southern Conference Fireman of the Year, tied for fifth statewide in saves with six. Righty Josh Smith tied for 16th with two and right Kenton Hering tied for 28th with one.

FINISHED SEASON 28-19 OVERALL

Eastern Florida finished the season with a 28-19 overall record and 12-12 in the Southern Conference. The Titans advanced to the NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA tournament for the first time since 2001.
