Brevard Fire Chief Larry Collins Terminated

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County Fire Chief Larry Collins was terminated this morning after five years at the helm of Brevard County Fire Rescue.

Brevard County Fire Rescue 25-year veteran Mark Schollmeyer has been named interim chief.

According to Brevard County spokesman Don Walker, Collin’s dismissal was a result of a difference of opinion with county management in the direction of the department.

Prior to coming to Brevard County, Collins had retired from his job as chief and director of the Dayton, Ohio, fire department. 

Collins, who was paid $104,500 annually, will receive 90 days severance pay.

The department consists of 482 paid emergency response personnel, 70 civilian employees and 158 fire and emergency medical reservists/volunteers. (BCFR image)

Brevard County Fire Rescue provides fire suppression services for unincorporated Brevard County and currently operates:

• 31 Fire Stations
• 17 ALS Fire Engines
• 4 ALS Ladder Trucks
• 29 ALS Ambulances
• 22 Brush Trucks
• 1 Hazardous Materials Truck
• 2 Breathing Air Units
• 5 District Chiefs
• 2 Fire/Rescue Boats
• 1 Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Tractor Trailer
• 1 Mobile Command Trailer

The department consists of 482 paid emergency response personnel, 70 civilian employees and 158 fire and emergency medical reservists/volunteers.

Last year, the department responded to 101,793 fire/EMS calls.
