BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – During the week of January 30 through February 2 we noticed a spree of spare tires stolen off the rear of Jeep styled vehicles.

MELBOURNEBADGE-180There were a total of five reported incidents where the rear spare tire was removed from vehicles.

The incidents occurred across the City of Melbourne, and occurred during both daytime and night-time hours.

Melbourne Police Detective Dennis Higgins noted that a commonality in each theft case was the absence of a “Locking Lug Nut” to secure the spare tire on Jeep styled vehicles.

A “Locking Lug Nut” is relatively inexpensive in comparison to replacing a full size spare tire.

A “Locking Lug Nut” is also valuable in deterring criminal activity of this type. The cost to replace Jeep styled spare tires is between $400 to $700. Det. Higgins was able to identify each victim and recovered their stolen spare tires from a local pawn shop.

Most thieves are “opportunistic,” as statistics show that most crimes are primarily “crimes of opportunity.”

Criminals often target unlocked cars, open garage doors and unlocked homes because of the ease of entry and removal of hand carried items.

Most thefts from cars and neighborhood burglaries happen when victims do not properly secure their property.

Remember: ‘Lock it Up’:
• Secure your home and vehicles…lock your doors
• Don’t Leave Valuable in Plain View
• Park in Well Lighted Areas
• Don’t Leave Your Car Running
