BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – In honor of Florida Tech alum Tim Wakefield, Florida Tech will hold a ceremony to officially dedicate its new batting cage to the former major leaguer at the F.W. Olin Sports Complex this Saturday at 11 a.m.
The event is open to the public, as Wakefield, President Anthony Catanese and Athletic Director Bill Jurgens will be in attendance and are scheduled to speak before the audience.
The facility has been an added bonus to the Panther baseball and softball programs, allowing for use during rainy weather and late into the night.
As a result of his remarkable collegiate career, Wakefiled was inducted into the Florida Tech Sports Hall of Fame, Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame and Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame.
A two-time World Series Champion, Wakefield played three seasons at Florida Tech from 1986-88.
Most recently, Wakefield joined the University Board of Trustees in January 2014.
Wakefield was named Team MVP his sophomore and junior seasons as a first baseman. He still owns program records for home runs (40), single-season home runs (22) and RBIs (71). He was inducted into the Florida Tech Sports Hall of Fame and Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame following his career.
He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1988 and spent 19 seasons as a pitcher at the big league level. He earned 200 career wins, 186 were recorded with the Boston Red Sox.
Following the dedication, the Panther baseball team will host Pace in a doubleheader at 12 p.m. at Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field.
Following the conclusion of the event, the undefeated Florida Tech baseball team will take the field for game one of its doubleheader with Pace beginning at noon.
