Eastern Florida Titans Golf Team Wins District, Heads To Nationals

Eastern Florida’s golf team won its second NJCAA District 4 championship in three seasons on Tuesday in Alexander City, Alabama, with the Titans Kerry Sweeney taking the top individual honor. (EFSC Image)

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Eastern Florida’s golf team won its second NJCAA District 4 championship in three seasons in Alexander City, Alabama, with the Titans Kerry Sweeney taking the top individual honor.

Eastern Florida shot 294 for 18 holes to finish at 886. Host Central Alabama Community College shot 310 to finish second at 907. EFSC’s lead after Monday’s round of 36 holes was five strokes.

The top five team finishers advance to the NJCAA Division I Men’s National Championship May 10-15 in Newton, Kansas.

Individually for Eastern Florida, All-District honoree and freshman Sweeney was the individual medalist at 68-72-76 = 216.

“It’s a grind,” Sweeney said.

“I love to win don’t get me wrong, but this is a team thing. I’m here for them not myself.”

Also for the Titans, sophomore Drew Cooke shot 73-74-70 = 217 to finish second; freshman and All-District honoree Mickey DeMorat carded 77-74-72 = 223 for fourth; freshman Corey Herman carded 79-77-76 = 232 and sophomore Brad Gray shot 78-76-79 = 233.

Sweeney’s victory was the second for the Titans in two years. Sophomore Arthur Leonard captured the title in 2014.

“The guys did an awesome job all year and it showed all three rounds,” said Eastern Florida head coach and district Coach of the Year Jamie Howell.

“It was an awesome finish for Sweeney with three tournament wins in a row.”

The district title was the fifth in the last 13 seasons for the Titans earning them their 13th consecutive trip to the national tournament.
