People develop pain for many reasons. Acute pain can be from a recent injury, surgery, or medical illness. This pain can typically be managed immediately and will more than likely improve in a short period of time.

In some instances, your primary care physician may refer you to a pain management physician to manage your pain while you are healing.

If you have persistent pain, pain that gets worse over time, or pain that persists after the healing process should be over, you may have what is classified as chronic pain.

Again, your primary care physician may refer you to a pain management physician.

Cancer pain related to surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or the tumor itself can also be managed by a pain management physician in conjunction with the referring oncologist.
