Tampa Yankees Defeat Brevard Manatees 4-2, Surrendered 11 Hits

BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – The Tampa Yankees (21-23, 55-59 overall) smacked 11 hits in a 4-2 victory over the Brevard County Manatees (18-24, 47-64 overall) on Monday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

The Manatees immediately took the lead in the top of the first inning. Omar Garcia started the game with a sharply hit double down the left field line. Chris McFarland then singled up the middle to plate Garcia and open the scoring.

Tampa took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning against Brevard County starter Jorge Ortega. With one on and one out, Ericson Leonora hit a two-run home run to left field. Leonora’s 11th homer of the year gave Tampa a 2-1 lead.

Brevard County tied the game in the fifth. With one out, Angel Ortega reached on a fielding error by third baseman Miguel Andujar. Garcia then walked. Two batters later, Clint Coulter singled into center field and plated Ortega. It was Coulter’s 50th RBI of the season.

The Yankees scored the deciding runs in the bottom of the sixth. Mike Ford tripled with one out and scored on an Andujar ground-rule double. Later in the inning, Michael O’Neill singled on a soft liner to right field and plated Andujar.

Ortega (8-8, 2.62 ERA) took the loss. He surrendered four runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out four. Trevor Seidenberger threw two scoreless innings in relief.

Jordan Montgomery (4-4, 3.23 ERA) tossed six innings to earn the win. He gave up two runs – one earned – on six hits. Giovanny Gallegos recorded the final four outs to earn his third save of the season.

The Manatees and Yankees will continue the series at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night. RHP Johnny Hellweg (1-3, 7.20 ERA) will toe the rubber for Brevard County.

Tampa will send RHP Vicente Campos (1-5, 6.35 ERA) to the bump.
