AL96 Has 70% Chance of Becoming Tropical Depression in Eastern Atlantic: NHC Report
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – A tropical disturbance in the eastern Atlantic Ocean has a high chance of becoming a tropical depression during the next several days, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The system, designated Invest 96L, or AL96, is associated with an area of low pressure centered a few hundred miles south-southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands.
Showers and thunderstorms connected to the system have changed little in organization over the past several hours. However, environmental conditions appear favorable for gradual development.
Forecasters said AL96 will likely become a tropical depression during the next day or two as it moves westward to west-northwestward across the eastern and central tropical Atlantic.
Conditions could become less favorable for additional development by the weekend.
The National Hurricane Center gives the system a 70% chance of formation during the next 48 hours and a 70% chance through the next seven days.
It remains too early to determine whether AL96 will eventually pose a threat to the Caribbean, Florida or the United States.
Residents are encouraged to monitor future forecasts as the system moves across the Atlantic.
