BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – Agents from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting death of a Merritt Island man at around 1 a.m. Friday morning.

According to Maj. Tod Goodyear of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Christian Maffeo, 26, was shot to death during an altercation that started at a New Year’s Eve party on Ocean Street in Merritt Island.

“The investigation has revealed that an altercation ensued between the owner of the residence and the brother of Harrison Norton,” said Maj. Goodyear in a release.

“As the Norton brothers were leaving the area, several males, including Christian Maffeo, initiated a second disturbance. As the brothers entered their vehicle and attempted to drive away, their exit was blocked by the group who began causing damage to the vehicle,” said Maj. Goodyear.

In an attempt to scare away the attackers, Harrison Norton, 26, retrieved a firearm from the vehicle and pointed it at Maffeo, who was hitting the driver’s side window with his fists.
