It was 24 years ago (Oct. 20, 1991) that Clint Black wed his wife, Lisa Hartman Black.

The Music City-meets-Tinseltown story of Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black started in 1990, when the actress went backstage with her mother to meet the country singer after his New Year’s Eve concert in Houston, Texas. Sparks immediately flew between the two.

But while they knew they wanted to be together, they both admit that they hesitated to walk down the aisle.

“I always felt you go through life and you have relationships and you learn and you grow and you change, and that’s what life is,” Hartman Black tells People magazine.

“The thought of spending my whole life with just one person didn’t make sense to me.”

Adds Black, “I always liked the idea of a relationship, but with my schedule, it never worked out.”

Clearly, it worked out just fine for the happy couple. The two wed on the singer’s 180-acre farm outside of Houston and settled into happily married life.

“The feeling that I get from taking care of him is very potent,” said Hartman Black. “I’d never felt that before.”

Fans got a glimpse into their love story when they sang together on the duet “When I Said I Do,” from Black’s D’lectrified album. The song won the pair an ACM Award for Vocal Event of the Year.

After a top-secret courtship, the couple wed in Katy, Texas, in 1991. They welcomed daughter Lily Pearl in 2001. Now, the couple is coming up on a quarter of a century as husband and wife, and they’ve even recorded an award-winning duet, ‘When I Said I Do,’ that will be played at weddings for ages to come.

Laughter helps keep a marriage strong, as does one other thing: Black received some helpful tips from the late Roy Rogers.

“We nurture our marriage. When [Roy] found out we were getting married, he said, ‘I’ll give you one little piece of advice: Don’t ever go to bed angry,'” Black says. “And he was right. What we’ve always done is deal with emotions and problems as they come along.”
