Newsroom Leader At Florida Today For Many Years
SATELLITE BEACH * BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — GateHouse Media has named newsroom veteran Tom Clifford to serve as vice president of the company’s center for news and design, according to a release.
Clifford, the executive editor of the Montgomery (Alabama) Advertiser, will lead general operations for the Austin, Texas, center, a hub for GateHouse’a content operations. In this role, Clifford will guide product strategy and have responsibility for the editing and design of more than 210 of the company’s publications, as well as commercial clients.
“This great opportunity to run GateHouse’s News and Design center is a capstone to my career so far,” Clifford said in an email to spacecoastdaily.com. “It’ll require me to take every journalism skill and leadership trick I’ve learned over the years and apply them, which is really cool. And Austin! The real music city U.S.A. I am jazzed.
“The only bad thing about all this is it puts me that much farther away from my true home in Satellite Beach. But, as the saying goes, I’ll be back. Often.”
He still owns a home in Satellite Beach and frequently visits Brevard County.
Clifford previously led the digital news operations at Florida Today in Rockledge, where he also was the features editor and oversaw the content and the design of the Gannett-owner paper.
Afterward, Clifford became executive news director at the Post & Courier in Charleston, South Carolina, before being named the executive editor of the Montgomery Advertiser in 2013.
He’s also been a reporter and editor in North Carolina, New York City, Baltimore, Virginia and Mississippi.
Clifford received his bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina.
